Scientist, 104, who 'regrets' his long life dies as Swiss euthanasia clinic

David Goodall, a renowned 104-year-old Australian scientist who came to Switzerland to end his life, died on Thursday.

The 104-year-old scientist who said he "regrets" living such a long life has died at a euthanasia clinic in Switzerland. Ethicists at a leading Swiss medical association oppose assisted suicide for anyone besides people with terminal illnesses. Now seven states (and Washington, D.C.) have laws allowing assisted suicide for terminally ill, mentally competent adults - Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont, Montana, Washington, Colorado and California.

"One wants to, at my age, even rather less than my age... to be free to choose death when the death is at an appropriate time", Goodall said during his final public appearance.

Born in London in April 1914, only weeks ahead of the outbreak of World War I, Goodall along with his family moved to Australia when he had been a kid. "And I'm very happy to end it", Goodall said Thursday in the room where he died shortly after.

The organization arranged his appointment at Life Circle and raised funds for the scientist to travel business class from Australia to Switzerland. "The decades-old legislation that authorized the practice also says, somewhat vaguely, that people who help others to die can not do so for "selfish" reasons".

David Goodall, who was not terminally ill, died while listening to Beethoven having enjoyed his last meal of fish and chips.

Residents flee lava from Hawaiian volcano
They could eventually consolidate into one powerful vent, as has happened in some previous Hawaii eruptions, Stovall said. On Sunday, a lava flow was moving away from Fissure No. 8 at significantly less than 1 miles per hour , Stovall said.

He requested that no funeral or remembrance service be held and that his body be donated to medicine or his ashes sprinkled locally. David Goodall swallowed the lethal cocktail of chemicals at the Swiss clinic today.

Sky's Michelle Clifford said police and coroner officials would now need to visit the clinic to make sure the assisted suicide was carried out properly.

Victoria last year became the first State to introduce a euthanasia Bill, effective in June next year, allowing terminally ill patients to end their lives. "I am content to leave them undone". After an uproar and support from scientists globally, the decision was reversed.

Yesterday, while wearing a jumper with the words "Aging Disgracefully", he told a news conference: "There are many things I would like to do, but it's too late".

However, the professor said that he hoped the large mediatization of his case would lead to the legalization of assisted dying in other countries.

"A peaceful, dignified death is the entitlement of all who want it", it said on its website on Monday.
