Facebook Inadvertently Launches 'Hate Speech' Button

Mark Zuckerberg Capitol Hill

However, Facebook determined a bug caused the internal feature to launch publicly.

The writer confirmed that her post definitely wasn't hate speech, but noticed the bug was appearing on every post in her newsfeed.

The company inadvertently set the feature live for 20 minutes yesterday during the company's annual F8 developer conference when conducting an "internal test".

On Tuesday morning, many users reported seeing a prompt beneath every Facebook post on their News Feed asking if the post contained hate speech. "Where the intention is unclear, we may remove the content".

This morning, the social media giant Facebook began testing out a button for users to report posts as hate speech.

And minority groups have long said that they believe Facebook's rules and enforcement unfairly punish those who try to call out hate speech and racism.

The social media platform defines hate speech as, "Content that attacks people based on their actual or perceived race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or disease is not allowed", according to the company's website.

Facebook's ability to police the content on its platform has been under scrutiny since the 2016 election season, when misinformation and divisive messages marred its News Feed and advertising.

Zuckerberg says the company has already developed intelligent software tools to root out terrorist propaganda and will continue to develop them for hate speech.

'That's a success in terms of rolling out AI tools that can proactively police and enforce safety across the community, ' Zuckerberg added.

A Facebook spokesperson said they were unable to comment at this time.
