Congress fights over House chaplain's ouster

Lawmakers demand answers on chaplain firing

Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Ala., quoted in the Post, said Ryan told members "that there were concerns expressed to him, the speaker, from a large number of members that their pastoral needs were not being met by Father Conroy".

According to the House guidelines on the chaplaincy, the chaplaincy is a tradition handed down from the Continental Congress. He remains grateful for Father Conroy's service'.

Democrats - and Conroy himself - have cited a prayer he offered last Fall that called for fairness as the House debated tax cuts as a reason for GOP discontent with his performance. "Was there political pressure?" said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. Conway's term as chaplain began in 2011.

Others believe the dismissal stemmed from a clash between the Catholic chaplain's religious beliefs and those of evangelical GOP lawmakers who complained he wasn't meeting their pastoral needs.

Conroy's departure was announced early last week, but the issue has blown up in recent days as members have learned that he is not leaving voluntarily but at the request of Ryan.

"I've seen no evidence that he should have been removed", King said in the Post.

In a statement, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi disputed the claim that Conroy failed to meet the needs of House members.

"I don't think just because you are of that particular strain of faith, that prevents you from doing it. But it's really a sad state of affairs", she said.

As of the 2011 Congressional Research Service report on chaplains. the House chaplain earns $172,500 a year, and the Senate chaplain was paid $155,500 a year.

In the prayer, Conroy asked that lawmakers "guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans".

He is ruthless enough to have had relatives executed but now feels secure enough in power to gamble on Trump, they said. A banquet and farewell ceremony will follow in the evening before Mr Kim returns to the North.

Cleaver spoke at length with Conroy on Thursday.

"A staffer came down and said, 'We are upset with this prayer; you are getting too political, '" Conroy said.

Conroy told the New York Times that shortly afterward Ryan warned him to "stay out of politics".

Both Boehner and Ryan are practicing Catholics. Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly said he wasn't sure why Ryan made the decision and wants to the Wisconsin Republican to answer questions over "this breach that he created".

It's not immediately clear why Conroy was asked to resign. "No explanation and no consultation".

Ryan strongly denies the prayer had anything to do with Conroy's ouster.

Ryan said he chose to make a change because of the concerns and that there was no misconduct, the Nevada Republican said. But Ryan assured members that was not the reason for Conroy's firing.

In the first letter, he wrote "as you requested, I hereby offer my resignation".

Several Democrats used the lack of guidelines to say Ryan did not have the authority under House rules to dismiss Conroy.

Conroy turned in his resignation letter April 16.
