UK Jews 'Disappointed' with Corbyn's Apologies for Labour Anti-Semitism

Earlier this week a series of Labour MPs spoke in the Commons about the abuse they had received from people who claimed to be supporters of Mr Corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn's attempt to build bridges with Jewish community leaders have received another setback after they accused him of failing to take action to tackle anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.

"After we have had our meeting with Mr. Corbyn on April 24, we will see whether he and the Labour Party have committed to the action we need against antisemitism", the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council said in a joint statement turning down their invitations.

Some Jewish Labour supporters were very enthusiastic, feeling that this boded well for a meeting Corbyn was to have with two Jewish groups: the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council.

The veteran Unite chief said "Corbyn-haters" were whipping up the controversy for their own ends and warned them that they face mandatory deselection as Labour election candidates.

"For me, the Labour Party was created to fight injustice, to fight against prejudice, to fight against hatred, and that we are where we are really hurts me, so we have got to act".

In response, Mr Corbyn said he was "absolutely committed" to rooting out anti-Semitism in the party and had instructed new general secretary Jennie Formby to overhaul its disciplinary procedures to ensure complaints were dealt with "swiftly and fairly".

Expectations before Tuesday's meeting were low, reported British broadcaster ITV, with little progress being made in preparatory discussions on Monday between representatives from the Jewish groups and Seumas Milne, Corbyn's director of strategy and communications. "That's why we are all here today".

One of them said that the rows about anti-Semitism - prejudice against Jewish people - in Labour had been "largely fabricated".

"Words in letters and newspaper articles will never be enough".

"We will hold the Labour Party to account for any future failures". Anti-Semitic attitudes began to enter Labour politics in the 1970s, in response to Israeli policy in the disputed territories.

While Labour MPs have been told not to appear on platforms alongside those who have been expelled or suspended as a disciplinary measure, there was no such ban on appearing with people - such as Walker - suspended pending investigation.

She said: "It is a misery and a tragedy that Margaret Hodge and other Labour MPs have received nasty anti-Semitic comments, I suspect most of these have been on social media and I suspect that no-one has actually worked hard to find out exactly who this nasty stuff is coming from".

The groups rejected an invitation to a "roundtable" meeting between Corbyn and other Jewish community groups scheduled for Wednesday, saying that it had "no agenda for action". These included acknowledging the concerns of the community rather than dismissing them as "smears" and engaging in "a program of political education to deepen...members' understanding of what anti-Semitism is".
