Snapchat Launches New Water Resistant Spectacles

In addition to only capturing video in high definition now, the new Spectacles can also shot photos.

Ultimately, what investors might be most interested in next week might be signals about how the company's Q1 redesign has affected business. The company has announced a new version of the Spectacles that comes with several upgrades in what appears to be doubling down on wearables.

The Spectacles are available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and France starting Thursday.

Similarly, the Google Glass smart spectacles, launched in 2013, famously earned its wearers the sobriquet "Glasshole", and the company eventually stopped producing the device in 2015.

While they're the same general colors - the original Spectacles came coral, teal, and black, as depicted in the image above - the new Spectacles colors are darker and more high-end.

You can still add stickers and drawings to your Snaps after you've exported them, but you can't add AR filters.

Kevin Hart Takes On His Own Cheating Scandals In New J
While the content of the five-minute video stems from a pretty serious place, Hart manages to inject a good amount of humor into his performance.

The primary function of the glasses is to take video from the perspective of the wearer. And the field of view is reduced from 115 to 105 degrees to address some of the V1's fish-eye warping, according to TechCrunch. Snap has since recorded customer and employee complaints about the Spectacles in order to avoid another substantial loss.

The frames are now lighter, the charging case is slimmer, and the glasses are water resistant.

The sunglasses allow users to record photos, video and audio that can then be transferred to Snapchat for messages to friends. There's 4GB of storage on board letting you store up to 150 videos or 3,000 photos. To operate, the glasses do not need to be paired with a phone and can connect with Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 A/C Wi-Fi for transferring photos after a long day out.

It's not just the outside that's changed, Snap has refreshed the inside as well.

The Verge reports that Snap was able to repurpose some of that unused inventory to make the next generation of Spectacles.

Compared with Snap's previous glasses, the hardware and capability of these glasses are a simpler iteration. The company behind Snapchat managed to drum up plenty of excitement for its hands-free camera when vending machines for the accessory began popping up all over the world a year ago, but that hype didn't ever translate into sales. Time will tell, but it's very obvious that the company cares about their product line and there is already discussions of a more expensive version that includes an additional camera. And yeah, there's no telling just how well the new Spectacles will sell, but here's to them doing okay. The company will also only be selling the Spectacles online. Are Spectacles 2 something that is even interesting to you or is it simply a gimmick?
