Government suffers three more heavy Brexit Bill defeats at hands of Lords

Thursday's motion calls on the government to reconsider its decision.

"The Elders welcome the assertion by UK Prime Minister Theresa May of the paramountcy of the Good Friday Agreement, and the importance of ensuring that nothing should be done to allow the reimposition of a hard border".

The vote can be overturned by the lower house, the House of Commons, but underscores the deep divisions over Brexit across parliament and could encourage lawmakers hoping to derail May's plans to forge a new relationship with the EU.

Mrs May has ruled out joining a customs union but has come up with two options to avoid a hard border in Ireland.

The Financial Times reports that Mrs May is expected to try to secure agreement on an alternative to the customs union, in a Brexit cabinet committee meeting next week.

And there was a third defeat for ministers, consequential to the previous reverses, retaining the right of legal action from any failure to comply with the general principles of European Union law.

On the face of it, this seems to be a warning to Conservative anti-Brexit rebels: back May and vote against a customs union, or else risk bringing down the government and let in the opposition Labour Party. There are some real challenges there, but I can do this. Be that as it may, plans to complete this dedication were creased in the House of Lords prior this week and ten Conservative MPs have officially marked a correction to the administration's Trade charge which could drive a reexamine.

Irish boost from Mexico trade deal
A government statement says tariffs will be scrapped on Mexican orange juice, tuna, honey, agave syrup, fruits and vegetables, among others.

But as the Prime Minister knows from bitter experience after calling a snap election a year ago - which resulted in her losing her majority - high-stakes gambles can backfire spectacularly.

Those against exiting the European Union believe that gaining sufficient support in the House of Commons to reject any divorce deal presented is the best way of preventing Britain from leaving the bloc.

Those plans included two options, either a "customs partnership" effectively collecting duties for Brussels for goods arriving in the United Kingdom but intended for European Union markets or a "highly streamlined" arrangement making use of technology and regulatory co-operation. Under those circumstances, the current government could be saved - but it is nearly certain that May would have to stand down.

She said Labour was "more interested in frustrating the process and playing politics than they are in delivering a successful Brexit".

She was asked whether she would personally vote to keep Britain in the customs union if she was a backbench MP.

The Prime Minister is now exclusively focused on internal party management and masking the divisions within her government.

The motion put before Parliament this autumn on the final Brexit agreement will be amendable by MPs and its outcome will be binding on the Government, David Davis has said.
