Windrush: An insult too many. How PMQs missed the point

Racists—Amber Rudd and Theresa May

The Windrush scandal dominated proceedings in Westminster today, with Home Secretary Amber Rudd coming under more pressure to resign.

Theresa May has steadfastly stuck to the immigration target first set by David Cameron - despite opposition from within her own party.

Speaking after Ms Rudd's appearance, a spokesman for her department said it has "never been Home Office policy to take decisions arbitrarily to meet a target".

Rudd told a parliamentary committee she had known about the problem for months and said officials were still checking how many people had been detained over their supposed immigration status.

The report also said the Home Office had a process for returning families who had no legal right to remain in the United Kingdom, something which had a "single numerical target".

"This is an excellent move and it not only answers the questions persons have been asking but certainly delivers what we have been calling for and what Prime Minister Andrew Holness and other CARICOM heads had asked for - that there be some compensatory relief and that the citizenship to which those persons are entitled, be granted", she said.

This would help avoid falsehoods and controversies, he said. "We should not blame the media, media is doing its work". BJP has support of all communities and it has emerged as a party which has representatives from all communities.

She added: "I have private conversations with the prime minister which will stay private".

"We don't have targets for removals", she said.

Voluntary departures also includes people who approach the Home Office for financial help with their travel arrangements.

Interior minister Amber Rudd said on Wednesday she deeply regretted failing to realize there was a widespread problem that some Caribbean immigrants who have lived legally in Britain for decades were being labeled illegal immigrants.

Why, also, does the compensation offered by the aforementioned Ms Rudd only appear to extend to the cost of Windrush citizens applying to reaffirm their residency rights - and not the very obvious distress caused to them?
