Pa. Supreme Court orders immediate release of Meek Mill

Meek Mill

The rapper described his last five months in prison as "a nightmare" and said numerous "prayers visits, calls, letters, and rallies" helped him stay "positive".

The district attorney, Larry Krasner, who was elected previous year on a platform of criminal justice reform, told NBC News this month that allegations of faulty police work have changed how prosecutors see Mill's case and others. "There's a lot of light shedded on my situation".

His lawyers announced they were going to appeal, claiming he was being unfairly punished and that Meek Mill had turned his life around and was now a role model to others in a similar position.

As we previously reported, on Tuesday, the 30-year-old rapper was released from prison after serving nearly five months behind bars for violating probation.

Judge Genece Brinkley, who sentenced the rapper for the probation violation, said he wasted several chances to clean up his act after the 2009 case. But Meek Mill keeps fighting.

A high profile campaign to free him began with stars like Jay-Z, Beyonce and Kevin Hart pledging their support to the rapper. "But bitter because it's taken this amount of time".

Meek Mill is out of jail, but he's kind of in disbelief over that fact.

Meek made his first public appearance after being released on bail as the special guest of Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin at Game 5 of the NBA Playoffs.

"The frustration for me is, why is he still there?"

Hart said his relationship with Meek Mill is strong and that he views the rapper as innocent. She is well known in Philadelphia for being tough, and tough across the board.

In August, 2017, the nation's leading probation and parole supervision administrators signed a "Statement on the Future of Community Corrections" which called the system a significant driver of mass incarceration. He pointed out that a "random misstep" could bring consequences greater than the crime.

One thing McCants hopes will result from the attention on Mill's case is more focus on the issues faced by the millions of Americans who are on probation.

But a survey by The Marshall Project, a non-profit news organisation that covers the USA judicial system, found that at least 61,250 people - and probably far more - are in prison across the United States for minor parole violations like missing appointments, failing drug tests or staying out past curfew.

On Nov. 7, Jay-Z stopped his concert in Dallas to say of Meek Mill, "He caught a charge when he was, like, 19".
