Russian Federation prepares for massive cyber attacks, - US, UK joint statement

THERESA

Following the US-UK alert, Australian government issued a statement joining its allies in "expressing concern at the malicious cyber activity targeting commercially available routers around the world. We expect the British government to declare the same".

Additionally, Russian cyber attackers could potentially modify or deny traffic traversing through local government routers.

"This attempt by Russian Federation is a sharp reminder that Australian businesses and individuals are constantly targeted by malicious state and non-state actors, and we must maintain rigorous cyber security practices", Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security Angus Taylor said".

Ciaran Martin, chief executive of Britain's National Cyber Security Center, said Russian Federation had targeted "millions" of devices in both countries, often seeking to hack into individual homes or small businesses or to control their routers.

Millions of devices belonging to government offices, internet service providers and critical infrastructure operators were affected, the statement continued.

Martin said authorities have been tracking the campaign for about a year and the tactics behind them for longer. And two: "Encourage industry to secure the devices we depend on", White House cybersecurity coordinator Rob Joyce said.

U.S. and British officials said the infected routers could be leveraged to launch future offensive cyber operations.

"The Department of Homeland Security's technical alert that they put out today they recommend changing the password as soon as you can", Ng says.

In its alert, DHS described the hackers' techniques, from scanning internet address spaces to exploiting routers, switches and network intrusion-detection devices.

According to a report by Reuters, Washington and London have issued a joint alert saying the campaign by Russian government-backed hackers was meant to advance spying, intellectual property theft and other "malicious" activities and could be escalated to launch offensive attacks.

United States officials said this year that Russian military hackers compromised routers in South Korea in January and deployed new malware when the Olympics began in February.

A United Kingdom government spokesman said it was "yet another example of Russia's disregard for worldwide norms and global order - this time through a campaign of cyber espionage and aggression, which attempts to disrupt governments and de-stabilise business".
