McKayla Maroney says convicted predator Larry Nassar molested her 'hundreds' of times

McKayla Maroney Sometimes Wonders If Her Gymnastics Career Was Worth It After Abuse

Maroney, a member of the victorious USA team at the 2012 London Olympics, told Today Show's Savannah Guthrie that the abuse by Nassar started at her first meeting with him when she was 13 and continued for years afterwards.

"He said that nobody would understand this and the sacrifice that it takes to get to the Olympics, so you can't tell people this".

"Dr. Nassar told me that I was receiving 'medically necessary treatment that he had been performing on patients for over 30 years, '" her statement said. "He didn't say it in a way that was mean or anything like that".

Nassar, who worked for more than 20 years as the USA team physician, was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges and 10 counts of sexual assault of minors. The fact is that USA Gymnastics, the USOC, MSU and everyone continued to look away-all they cared about was money. "So you can't tell people this", Maroney recalled. Maroney was one of more than 140 girls and women, including fellow Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles, who have come forward and accused Nassar of abuse.

"This week's hearing is a critical step forward in our investigation into the serious systemic abuses across generations of young athletes", said U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, the subcommittee's ranking member.

The lawsuit further alleges that USA Gymnastics destroyed medical records of Jordyn Wieber, "to further hide the sexual abuse of Nassar". "He was the only male allowed to be present in the athlete dorm rooms to do whatever he wanted". She also said that Nassar was allowed to be alone with athletes unlike other adults. "In addition, we're working to add more counseling and therapist staff positions and to reduce the response times for complaints". My teammates were not protected.

Former gymnasts who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar seek new laws to hold abusers, and those who enable abuse, accountable. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornography charges in 2017 and sentenced to at least 80 additional years by two additional MI judges for sexual assault earlier this year.
