U.S. to impose sanctions on Russian Federation over Syria aide, Haley says

"We're evaluating, but nothing to announce right now".

British foreign minister Boris Johnson on Sunday said the Syrian war will inevitably continue after unprecedented Western strikes, which were limited to targeting the country's alleged chemical weapons facilities.

"The coalition strike in Syria is a measured response to Assad's barbaric use of chemical weapons".

The most recent destruction in Syria is the aftermath of the USA who, along with its allies France and the United Kingdom, bombed three empty facilities all related to Syria's chemical weapons. But President Donald Trump scrapped this decision, relaying a message through White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Asked for comment, the White House gave an identical response to an earlier statement by Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, who said: "We are considering additional sanctions on Russian Federation and a decision will be made in the near future". "In addition, we expect our regional allies and partners to take greater responsibility both militarily and financially for securing the region".

The Washington Post first reported that Trump had put a stop to a plan for additional economic sanctions on Russian Federation.

While President Donald Trump praised his military for a successful operation tweeting "Mission Accomplished", the Pentagon was quick to retort, that "this operation does not represent a change in United States policy", and that it was not an attempt to dethrone Assad or be involved in the Syrian civil war.

"[The residents] told me...the rebels were desperate and they needed a ploy to help get the Syrian Army off their backs, so they can escape", he said.

Pentagon on Syria strikes: 'We successfully hit every target'
Russia's ambassador to the United States said Moscow had warned that "such actions will not be left without consequences". Thousands of people are also retweeting some of Trump's previous comments warning against military action in Syria .

"I urge all Member States to show restraint in these unsafe circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate the situation and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people", he said.

"It's impossible to say at this point the mission has been accomplished", King, who caucuses with Democrats, said on CNN's "State of the Union".

"When we knew it was just because of using chemicals and not to help Syrian people everyone was kind of sad to hear that no-one cared". "Failure to act to hold perpetrators to account will only risk further barbaric use of chemical weapons, in Syria and beyond".

Another senior administration official said Haley had gotten a little bit ahead of herself by saying more sanctions were coming, but not by much. Militarily, she said it "means one task now in front of you". Russian Federation has long backed the Assad regime and has repeatedly vetoed UN Security Council resolutions concerning chemical weapons.

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal condemned the air strikes as "not only unconstitutional" but also as possibly "escalating a conflict that could send us into a war with multiple countries".

Kori Schake, deputy director-general of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told NPR's Morning Edition on Monday that "this is a problem that you're going to have to keep paying attention to, because every time Bashar al-Assad needs a battlefield victory that he can't achieve by conventional forces, he employs chemical weapons to terrorize the rebels into submission".

"For all the sound and fury of these strikes, their net effect is a slap on the wrist of Bashar al-Assad", said Nick Heras, an analyst at the Center for a New American Security.
