The band paid tribute to the late founding bassist and co-lead singer with a performance that inlcluded his biggest songs. The first class of singles-all by artists who aren't in the Hall of Fame-was introduced by Stevie Van Zandt, who called it "kind of a rock 'n" roll jukebox; records by artists not in the Rock Hall, which is not to say these artists will never be in the Rock Hall.

Simone, who died in 2003, was a leader in pushing for civil rights and influenced everyone from Aretha Franklin to Alicia Keys.

The Moody Blues were ahead of their time, cutting edge. Rock Hall voters have recently opened their hearts to progressive rockers, which benefited the "Nights in White Satin" singers.

The Cars have pulled into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Each year, between five and seven acts usually make it into the Rock Hall following a vote by 1,000 people, including performers, music historians and industry experts.

After weeks and months of discussions, April 14th saw the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony take place, with musicians such as Nina Simone, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Moody Blues, and Dire Straits all receiving the prestigious honour.

He said he had been writing the speech for years.

Soul legend Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the gospel inspiration for early rockers, both of whom were posthumously inducted, and British rockers Dire Straits rounded out the 2018 Hall of Fame class.

Jon Bon Jovi will be inducted alongside current bandmates David Bryan and Tico Torres, as well as former members Richie Sambora and Alec John Such.

As Rolling Stone notes, following a "hilarious" speech from presenter Howard Stern, the members of the group spoke about their history in the band, and what their induction means to them. With the much-publicised non-appearance of former Dire Straits frontman and songwriter Mark Knopfler, and the odd absence of a fellow artist to introduce them, it fell on his former bandmate and longtime friend John Illsley to induct the group himself.
