Pentagon on Syria strikes: 'We successfully hit every target'

Britain's government weighed the possibility of military action against Syria on Thursday

United States President Donald Trump agreed to launch coordinate strikes against Syria with allies on Friday. As he spoke, explosions rocked Damascus.

With the United States launching an air strike on Syria on Saturday morning, with help from the UK and France, the situation looks set to escalate as Russian Federation promised "consequences".

Le Drian said France, which has backed opponents of Assad throughout the civil war, would swiftly take new political initiatives to find a solution to the crisis. Russia's ambassador to the United States said Moscow had warned that "such actions will not be left without consequences".

Trump, while addressing the nation on Friday night, said the joint strike with France and the United Kingdom was now underway.

"These are crimes of a monster", said Trump, adding that Bashar al-Assad's "recent attack... are a direct result of Russia's failure..." A second witness said the Barzah district of Damascus had been hit in the strikes.

- The first was at a scientific research centre in greater Damascus involved in the development and production of chemical weapons, the second at a chemical weapons storage facility near Homs, and the third at a chemical equipment storage facility and important command post. She said the use of force was "right and legal" in this case. Numerous conservative commentators have lambasted the president for breaking one of his main campaign promises of not participating in military intervention in the Middle East. Thousands of people are also retweeting some of Trump's previous comments warning against military action in Syria. The gas attack, as claimed by him killed at least 40 people.

"We specifically identified these targets to mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved", Dunford told reporters, adding the United States military advised Russia of airspace that would be used in the strike but did not "pre-notify them".

A U.S. official told Reuters the strikes were aimed at multiple targets and involved Tomahawk cruise missiles.

The ministry reported that a total of 100 cruise and air-to-surface missiles had been fired (while 59 missiles were fired at Shayrat Airbase last year), a lot of them were shot down by Syria's air defense units while approaching the targets.

"Dozens of men, women and children were massacred with chemical weapons", he said of the Douma incident a week ago - adding that "the red line had been crossed".

"To Iran and to Russian Federation I ask, What kind of nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"

President Trump said Saturday morning airstrikes in Syria overnight were "perfectly executed", hours after he announced the USA, United Kingdom and France launched precision missile strikes in Syria in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria last weekend.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes had been limited so far to Syria's chemical weapons facilities.
