Malcolm Turnbull insists Coalition is still behind him after 30th Newspoll loss

30 Months Later Tony Abbott Is Demanding An Explanation For His Booting

Since his election, critics across the political spectrum have frequently cited the failure to end the insider-driven gamesmanship of Canberra, the capital, and the lack of clear leadership from Mr. Turnbull and his party.

Mr Shorten, who received negative poll results in the area of "attributes looked for in a leader", also questioned the relevance of polls. "The next election is absolutely there to be won", he said. But Opposition Deputy Leader Tanya Plibersek said the impending loss would be down to the policies Mr Turnbull is pursuing.

- The government kept its stocks around 47 per cent by thawing the Medicare rebate freeze in the May budget, introducing a levy on the much-hated banks, talking about cuts to power bills and revealing Gonski 2.0.

Major polling companies Newspoll, Ipsos, Essential, ReachTel and YouGov have conducted 138 surveys since the 2016 election.

It has won only five polls, all conducted by the United Kingdom polling firm YouGov between June and October 2017. However, Turnbull's conservative government continues to lag behind in the two-party preferred vote, 48 to 52.

But he later argued it was Mr Turnbull who set the test of consecutive Newspoll losses.

Liberal senator and Abbott supporter Eric Abetz said he was "not aware of any move" against Turnbull's leadership on the day of the prime minister's 30 Newspoll loss, but repeated his calls for government investment in coal-fired power to win back the support of voters.

As the dreaded poll approached, Mr Turnbull sought to emphasise the strength of the economy, while noting he retained the support of the Liberal party room.

"I regret making those remarks at the time, making the remarks about 30 Newspolls at the time. I never did. I don't think that others should", Abbott told reporters in Victoria state.

"That's what I tried to be and to do in government and I'm sure that's what the prime minister is trying to be and to do now".

Mr Abbott told News Corp on Sunday his colleagues should explain their decision, while saying "life is not fair".

Mr Abbott, who has been pushing for new coal-fired power stations, is touring the Latrobe Valley on Monday as part of his annual charity bike ride.

'If you truly believe [the Newspoll] is exactly the sentiment of the people, then you also have an obligation not to drive your party, or the government, off a cliff, ' he told Sky News.

"Monday, whatever the result is, will come and will go like every poll, and guess what the government will keep doing? It is clear that the people have made up their mind about Mr Abbott's leadership", he said at the time.

"But what I promised to do was to provide economic leadership and traditional cabinet government, and I have done both", Mr Turnbull said.
