Cameroon Athletes Disappear at Australia Commonwealth Games

Search for African athletes missing from Commonwealth Games village

The Australian Border Force has been alerted and Commonwealth Games officials are concerned about five Cameroon athletes who have gone missing on the Gold Coast.

A Cameroon official has said the eight athletes who vanished from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games athletes' village may have been "seeking greener pastures".

Out of the total team of 24 members, five boxers and three weightlifters have disappeared over the space of three days, the statement said.

"We are cooperating with the police".

Mr Nso said the team's officials and remaining athletes, including basketball players and two weightlifters, have already left Australia.

Cricket great Anil Kumble praised Indian athletes at this year's Games, with shooter Shreyasi Singh winning the nation's 12th gold medal earlier on Wednesday.

The first three left on Sunday night, with two others declared missing on Monday and a further three leaving the village on Tuesday night.

All athletes at the Commonwealth Games have visas to travel in Australia until May 15. However, he stressed the safety of these missing athletes is "being taken very, very seriously".

"They are keeping a watching brief on these athletes", she said.
