YouTube's Most Popular Video Deleted in Apparent Hack
Although Despacito may be the most high-profile target for a YouTube hack, it seems that this isn't the only music video that was affected.
Earlier today some artists that are under the Vevo umbrella had their YouTube videos compromised, with many being defaced. The report said the video's images were first altered and replaced with a masked gang holding guns and the description was changed by hackers named Prosox and Kuroi'sh, who wrote "Free Palestine" underneath the videos. Videos from Adele, Chris Brown, DJ Snake, Drake, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Shakira, and Taylor Swift were reportedly also hacked.
When you tried clicking on the thumbnail, the video was unavailable.
YouTube's global head of music Lyor Cohen is a particularly strong believer in the power of online video to support artists.
Speaking with the BBC, YouTube stated that "After seeing unusual upload activity on a handful of Vevo channels, we worked quickly with our partner to disable access while they investigate the issue". It had five billion views at the time of the hacking and was pulled off the site during the hack.
YouTube hit by cyberattack, 'Despacito' and other top music videos vanish (updated)
Vevo added: "We are working to reinstate all videos affected and our catalogue to be restored to full working order". And today, their account was hacked by a duo going by the names Prosox and Kuroi'sh.
"We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach", spokesperson Anthi Pantelidis said in an email.
"So, either this hacker has found a way around that need for authorisation, or they are being economical with the facts, or they obtained the permissions in some other way".
There has been no response from Google or YouTube, but the music videos have since been restored on YouTube at the time of writing.
