Oklahoma Teacher Walkout Will Continue Into Next Week

Oklahoma superstar chimes in about teacher walkout

Republican lawmakers said they have made major moves to boost education spending and it may be hard to find more money.

The demonstrations, which will mostly happen before the start of the school day, are meant to build more support from parents and school administrators.

It's day seven of the Oklahoma teacher walkout, and the message is not wavering.

The Legislature is expected to adjourn its session in the next few weeks and is already in the midst of budget negotiations.

A top Republican lawmaker said Tuesday that the Oklahoma Legislature has no plans to bow to striking teachers' demand to eliminate a capital gains tax break as a way to end a walkout now in its second week.

But behind the scenes, superintendents are discussing the logistics of a work stoppage. Organizer Noah Karvelis told The Associated Press that Ducey and GOP legislative leaders have not responded to their requests for negotiations, so they see no choice but to move to walkouts.

Will meet with Kim in May or early June
That work has been led by Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo, Trump's pick to become secretary of state. Hopefully it'll soon be considered a relationship that'so much diverse from it's been around for many, many decades.

"We are here today to rally support, not just for our teachers in the area, but for teachers across the state who have walked out of the classroom", Cole said. That ignited protests in other Republican-led states, including Kentucky and Arizona.

Far from uniting teachers against the nationwide assault on public education, the National Education Association (NEA), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and their state affiliates have done everything to divide and weaken teachers.

The teachers were joined Monday by more than 100 women attorneys who said while they're not taking a political stance, they want to help both sides come up with solutions that consider everyone's best interest.

"We stand united. We fight, and they're not going to divide us", said Sharita Stalnaker, an Edmond teacher. "These kids are being cheated and Oklahoma is reaping what they've sown for our education and our children".

The Legislature approved $2.9 billion for public schools, an increase of almost 20 percent over last year's spending. Senators say they can make up that shortage through other revenue in the bill.

Hoffman told police she'd taken a group of students, including the 15-year-old victim, to the state Capitol in Oklahoma City to take part in the protest. "I'm hoping they don't regress and we can catch up when we get back".
