Lawsuit: Three Michigan State basketball players raped woman in 2015

Woman alleges in new lawsuit 3 Michigan State basketball players sexually assaulted her

Guests enter the Spartan Engagement Center in the Demmer Family Pavilion on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 during a tour of the new North End Zone Complex renovations at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing on the Michigan State Campus.

Former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was recently convicted of sexual abuse, was a longtime employee at the university.

An ESPN investigative report revealed that under football coach Mark Dantonio's watch, 16 MSU football players had been accused of sexual assault or misconduct and that the coach handled the complaints and discipline.

The lawsuit states that the woman met the three basketball players at a bar in East Lansing on April 12, 2015 ― one week after Michigan State lost to Duke in the Final Four. A player offered to buy her a drink and asked her if she wanted to meet other guys from the basketball team at a party.

She was invited to an apartment by one of those players, according to the lawsuit, under the guise of a party. She was also reportedly told her roommate was already headed to the party. After arriving, she said there was no party with "few people present" and realized her roommate was not there. She also suspects she was drugged.

John Doe 2 offered to show her his basketball memorabilia, the woman was then given a drink of water. "She was afraid and seeing what was going on in the community - and that she would probably have more support now". The room then went dark and she was allegedly thrown face down on the bed and held in place, unable to move.

The woman said she was crying, she couldn't move and couldn't speak.

As soon as JD2 was done, JD1 and JD3 came in and held the alleged victim down, taking turns raping her, according to the lawsuit. She claims she passed out and later woke up on the couch and called a cab.

She caught a taxi back to her dorm room and contacted university Counseling Center staff about a week later. She is now suing the school for how she says she was treated.

After the woman told counsellingcentre staff that basketball players were involved, she said the staff made it clear that if she reported it to police "she faced an uphill battle that would create anxiety and unwanted media attention", according to the lawsuit.

On April 20, 2015, JR2 took the alleged victim to MSU's Counseling Center, or MSUCC, where the alleged victim reported the rape to a counselor and completed an initial intake and assessment.

According to the suit, the victim was "so discouraged by the representations made by the MSUCC Counseling staff she became frightened to the point that she decided she could not report the rape (s) to law enforcement".

The woman's suit claims she was not advised to have a physical exam, seek medical treatment or have STD or pregnancy tests. At no point was she informed of her Title IX rights, protections, and accommodations.

She doesn't remember anything else, according to the lawsuit.

The victim has claimed that she chose to come forward and take action because she did not want another girl in Michigan State to go through what she had to go through and have her life messed up. Speaking with ESPN on condition that she not be identified, she said she anxious they would be charged with underage drinking, and counseling staff did nothing to ease those concerns. Eventually she was forced to withdraw for the semester.

She returned to class in January 2016, and changed her major and goal of becoming a sports journalist. John Doe 1 then told her "you are mine for the night" and led to a bedroom.

The student said staff told her they had seen other cases involving well-known athletes and felt they were implying it would not be in her best interest to go to authorities.
