Pentagon Not Conducting Syria Missile Strikes

Missiles struck an air base in central Syria early on Monday, the country's state-run news agency reported, killing at least 14 people, including Iranians, according to a war-monitoring group.

Russian Federation said a USA military strike against Syria would have "grave repercussions" and stressed that the use of chlorine or sarin had not been confirmed in the attack Saturday in Douma.

In February, Macron had said "France will strike" in the event of a lethal chemical weapon attack on civilians by government forces in Syria. It said Syria shot down five of them while the other three landed in the western part of the base.

"Several missiles hit the".

Syrian state media, citing a military source, carried a similar report.

The U.S. Defense Department tweeted Monday morning: "At this time, the #DoD is not conducting air strikes in #Syria".

Asked at a cabinet meeting earlier on Monday if Russian President Vladimir Putin bore any responsibility for the attack, Trump said: "He may, yeah, he may".

Initial U.S. assessments have been unable to determine conclusively what materials were used in the attack and could not say with certainty that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government forces were behind it.

France also issued a denial.Syria's state news agency Sana initially called the reported missile strike on the Tiyas airfield a "suspected U.S. attack", but later dropped the reference to the US.

It took place hours after U.S. President Donald Trump warned of a "big price to pay" following the reports of a poison gas attack on the rebel-held town of Douma which killed dozens of people, including children.

And unlike a year ago , she said, the president wouldn't discourage other administration officials from attending. White House staff members also did not attend the 2017 event out of reported "solidarity" with the president.

Syrian activists have said that a poison gas attack on Douma, a town held by rebels, have killed over 40 people while the rest are seriously injured.

'President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad.

The Syrian government denied the allegations, calling them fabrications. The opposition's Syrian Civil Defense rescue organization said the victims appeared to have suffocated.

"More than 500 cases - the majority of whom are women and children - were brought to local medical centres with symptoms indicative of exposure to a chemical agent", according to a joint statement issued by the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and the White Helmets.

Those reports could not be independently verified because of a government blockade around the town.

Following the attack, the rebel group Jaish al-Islam gave way to a Syrian government demand that it accept safe passage out to rebel-held areas at the Turkish border.

Human rights groups and United Nations officials say the tactic amounts to forced displacement, a war crime.

The UN Security Council was holding an emergency meeting today to discuss the chemical attack.

But this time round, the Russians are warning of dire consequences if the West uses this alleged chemical weapon attack as a pretext to intervene in Syria.

It later added that there were "dead and wounded" in the strike, without giving exact casualty numbers.
