Investigation continues in NYPD shooting of man in Crown Heights

New York police shoot and kill Brooklyn man carrying metal pipe

Officers responded after receiving three 911 emergency calls saying a man was pointing an "object that appears to be a gun" at people on the street, said Terence Monahan, Chief of Department for the NY police.

According to the released transcripts, one caller to 911 reported that Vassell "looks like he's insane but he's pointing something at people that looks like a gun".

"This was a call of a man pointing what 911 callers said they felt was a gun", Monahan said. It seems like a gun.

"There is also video from commercial establishments along Utica Avenue that shows a man brandishing what appears to be a firearm - pointing it at people".

The release of the edited material on the NYPD's Twitter account - the full videos and transcripts weren't immediately provided - was meant to back up the department's claims that the four plainclothes and two uniformed officers who responded had a legitimate reason to believe they needed to move swiftly to stop a deadly threat.

The video seems to corroborate three 911 calls about a man fitting Vassell's description approaching people and pointing what appeared to be a silver gun at them.

Another caller says, "Oh my God!" and screams.

In New York state, the attorney general has the power to act as a special prosecutor in cases in which police officers kill unarmed people.

In 2014, Judge William Martini, of U.S. District Court in Newark, agreed, dismissing the case and saying that the plaintiffs had not "alleged facts" from which it could be plausibly inferred that they had been targeted exclusively due to their religion.

The metal object that cops mistook for a gun in a fatal Brooklyn shooting by police has been identified as the head of a welding torch, the NYPD said Friday.

Vassell said he saw his son, 35-year-old Saheed Vassell, just hours before he was shot by police two blocks from their home Wednesday afternoon. The officers began firing after he took a "two-handed shooting stance" and pointed an object in their direction, the department said.

Saheed Vassell's father told reporters that his son had previously worked as a welder. The officers fired 10 times, fatally wounding Vassell.

"The officers from the neighbourhood, they know him". "It's become clear they have no respect for human life". They should not train them to kill. They always have a choice.

As per an executive order, the attorney general has the authority to oversee investigations into incidents where unarmed civilians die during interactions with police, or incidents where there is significant question as to whether the civilian was armed and risky.

"Saheed Vassell, an unarmed Black man was murdered by NYPD Wednesday night", the event page for the rally reads.

Saheed Vassell's mother, Lorna, told WABC she is furious with the officers for shooting her son without asking him to drop the object or put up his hands.
