Trump wants military to secure border with Mexico

Trump demands 'nuclear option' to allow border patrol to 'do their job'

Trump has been deeply frustrated about the lack of progress building what was the signature promise of his campaign: a “big, lovely wall” along the Mexican border.

WASHINGTON (AP) - In a story April 3 about President Donald Trump announcing that he wants to use the military to secure the border, The Associated Press reported erroneously the length of the U.S. -Mexico border in Texas. "If they're not going to help us at the border, it's a very sad thing between our two countries".

Although Trump threatened a veto last month of an omnibus spending bill because it did not address the fate of Dreamers and did not fully fund his border wall, he did sign the bill.

Trump administration officials say they're crafting a new legislative package aimed at closing immigration "loopholes" following the president's calls for Republican lawmakers to immediately pass a border bill.

"Until we can have a wall and proper security we're going to be guarding our border with the military", Trump told reporters at the White House, lamenting what he called "horrible" USA laws that left the southern border poorly protected. Projected to cost at least $20 billion, the package includes only $1.6 billion for border wall funding, most of it targeted towards repairs in the existing wall. But much of that money can only be used to fix existing segments, not build new sections.

Among the new measures the administration is pursuing: ending special safeguards that prevent the immediate deportation of children arrested at the border and traveling alone.

The National Guard, part of the USA military's reserve forces, has been used in recent years for surveillance and intelligence on the border, but not direct law enforcement. Officials complain that many children never show up at their hearings. Such proposals are likely to face opposition from moderate Republicans and Democrats going into the midterm elections.

The "nuclear option" would require Republicans to change the rules, allowing for a vote with 51 votes.

Trump has been annoyed by the lack of progress on building what was the signature promise of his campaign: a "big, handsome wall" along the Mexican border. McConnell says Republicans will welcome the 60-vote margin if they return to the minority.

Trump boasted about the USA economy and military "levels" to little kids gathered on the White House lawn to roll Easter eggs.

Congress failed to meet that deadline, but courts have ruled the program can remain in place for now. Notably, his favored solution for extending protections to them mustered only 39 votes in the Senate, meaning it couldn't have passed even if the rules had been changed.

Trump railed against a "caravan" of Central American migrants travelling from the Mexico-Guatemala border in the last 10 days toward the United States, journeys that have occurred annually since 2010 in an effort to draw attention to the plight of people fleeing violence in their countries. “Its like we have no border.”.

About 1,100 migrants, many from Honduras, have been marching along roadsides and train tracks in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

The current march is scheduled to end this month with a conference on migration issues in the central Mexican state of Puebla, east of Mexico City.
