Mexico Senate rebukes Trump over border deployment plans

Mexican Senate slams Trump's bid to militarise border

In his tweet Thursday, Trump also said that border crossings are at a 46-year low, but said the rate was still "unacceptable".

President Donald Trump has signed a memo clearing the way for the deployment of National Guard troops to the border.

The president's tweet a day after the organizers of the caravan announced that they would end their journey in Mexico City, instead of continuing north to the U.S. "We will only act in the best interest of Mexicans", the Mexican leader said.

The frontrunner in Mexico's presidential race on Thursday said U.S. President Donald Trump's move to send national guard troops to the border was a political ploy based on misinformation to gain support from his conservative base.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey says his state welcomes the deployment of the National Guard to the U.S. -Mexico border.

In a Thursday morning tweet, the president credits "the strong immigration laws of Mexico and their willingness to use them".

The group of more than 1,000 migrants, mainly from Honduras, started breaking apart on Wednesday after days of walking as participants stopped for food and shelter in southern Mexico.

The caravan has captured the attention of Trump and his administration this week, serving as a symbol to further attempt to alter the foreign aid, trade and immigration policies the President has long wanted to tackle.

The migrant caravan, which left Chiapas, Mexico's most southern state, on March 25 is "still together, arranging documents with MX immigration, next stop Puebla, then meet with gov agencies, then many will go separate ways to apply for asylum in MX or USA", Mensing told the newspaper by text. "The way I see it, Nafta negotiations are less intense because the US needs Canada and Mexico more" if it becomes embroiled in a "full-on trade war" with China, he said.

Trump's warnings come despite new statistics from U.S. Customs and Border Protection that show the number of people caught trying to illegally cross the Southwest border in fiscal year 2017 was 303,916, the lowest since 1971.

Trump said Wednesday in a memorandum to his secretaries of defense and homeland security and to his attorney general that the "situation at the border has now reached a point of crisis".

Trump also noted he'd been criticized for saying in his campaign kickoff speech that Mexico was sending rapists across the border.
