Eddie Redmayne gave an emotional reading at the funeral of physicist and author Stephen Hawking on Saturday (31Mar18).

The bell at Great St. Mary's, as the church is known locally, tolled 76 times at the start of the service.

Hawking's eldest son, Robert, as well as Britain's Astronomer Royal Martin Rees gave the eulogies for Hawking.

The cosmologist had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease in his 20s. The guest list also included playwright Alan Bennett and Tesla and Space X founder Elon Musk.

Jane Hawking, the scientist's first wife, and Timothy Hawking, one of his three children, leave the church.

Hundreds packed the streets and applauded when Hawking's coffin arrived, carried by six porters from his university college, Gonville and Caius.

Today, his coffin was driven via a hearse through Cambridge, topped with white "Universe" lilies and white "Polar Star" roses.

On June 15 a service for Hawking will occur at Westminster Abbey in London in which the professor's ashes will be interred adjacent to the grave of Sir Isaac Newton - buried in 1727 - and near Charles Darwin - buried in 1882.

Mike Meylan, a New Zealand mathematics professor visiting Cambridge University, brought his children to explain Hawking's genius. The funeral service was only open to around 500 guests who knew him.
