Google Shuts Down Goo.gl URL Shortening Service

URL Shortener in Favour of Dynamic Links

Google is encouraging developers to make use of FDL APIs, which will automatically detect a user's platform and direct other users to any location within an iOS, Android or web app.

Developers who use the goo.gl API can continue to use the service; however, no new developers will be able to access this API starting May 30, 2018. Don't panic, though: shortened links will continue to redirect after access to the console is shut off. First, it was used for Google Toolbar and Feedburner, but it became goo.gl and opened up to the public in September 2010. From April 13, 2018, only existing users will be able to create short links on the goo.gl console. This way registered users will have time to download all their existing data related to shorten URLs they have created using goo.gl. Google short URL service provides brief analytics for each link separately to find the source of referrals, browsers and countries. "However, existing short links will not be migrated to the Firebase console/API". Now the company has announced that it is shutting down the services and is replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). You can create new links with the Firebase console. How often do you use a link shortening service?

The move will have an impact on both marketing departments and malware authors alike, both ardent users of Google's URL shortening service.

Will regret my actions for the rest of my life: Cameron Bancroft
Former Australia vice-captain David Warner has finally broken his silence regarding the ball-tampering controversy. "I don't blame anyone".

While this could be upsetting, it really isn't that big of a deal to the numerous other URL shorteners that are available. For example, deep links offer the benefit of being able to redirect someone to not only a website, but a point within a website.

As for the new users, the company recommends trying the new FDLs service to create their shorter links.
