Rahul Gandhi criticises PM Modi for 'misusing' app NaMo

PM MODI

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been accused of spying on his citizens through his office's official smartphone app.

One of the accused, Narain Lal Meena, is a resident of Sumerpur in Rajasthan's Pali district and the other, Vachanram Meena, is a resident of Barloot in Sirohi district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today lamented that many people mocked Bhimrao Ambedkar and made efforts to ensure that the son of a backward family does not progress but noted that today's "new India" is altogether different as it belongs to the poor and the backward.

Earlier in the day, Congress president Rahul Gandhi also took to Twitter to claim that the prime minister was giving data shares by app users to his "friends in American companies".

Rahul, in a tweet, alleged that the NaMo app secretly records the user's location, audio, video, contact information and other personal data.

A security researcher, tweeting under the pseudonym Eliott Alderson told that Indians' personal data was sent to a third party's server in the U.S. without prior permission.

"CleverTap employees don't have access to any of the data stored with it by a publisher", Anand Jain, co-founder of California-based firm, told in an interview in a short e-mail statement when asked if his company has access to users' personal information from the NaMo App. If as PM he wants to use tech to communicate with India, no problem.

If it's the Prime Minister's official app, why does it exhort users to go to BJP leaders" homepages and Twitter accounts via "BJP Connect'? The NaMo APP also hasn't followed the standard practice to inform the users when changes to the privacy policy are made, a practice that most major apps and websites follow. But the recent scandal over Cambridge Analytica's allegedly unauthorized harvesting of Facebook data and a series of leaks linked to India's biometric database has refocused the public's attention on digital privacy.

Mr Modi said, India has now moved ahead from the conventional approach in the health sector. "Their own policy says so" he added.

Congress social media in-charge Divya Spandana Ramya said the URL pointed out has been dysfunctional for a while and membership is through the INC website. Instead of #DeleteNaMoApp, they have deleted the Congress app itself. However, the Congress's social media head, Divya Spandana, denied storing or sharing any data, even calling Malviya a "dimwit" on the micro-blogging platform.

The BJP responded to the allegations by saying that the data is being used for analytics using third party service, similar to Google Analytics.
