Footage of autonomous Uber vehicle hitting pedestrian sparks outrage

Police in Arizona have released video after a deadly crash involving a self-driving Uber vehicle Monday morning

Police in U.S. state of Arizona on Wednesday released a short video of a fatal collision between an Uber self-driving vehicle and a pedestrian, as investigators probe the accident that has put new focus on the safety of autonomous vehicles.

The fatal collision between a self-driving Uber SUV and a pedestrian in Arizona marked the first death involving a fully autonomous test vehicle, as reported by The Associated Press.

Uber's paused self-driving auto testing programs are in Pittsburgh, the Tempe metropolitan area, San Francisco, and Toronto. Herzberg is clearly seen walking alongside her bike two to three seconds before the crash.

"Our thoughts continue to be with Elaine's loved ones", Uber said in a statement Wednesday night.

"We're heartbroken by what happened this week, and our cars remain grounded", the Uber spokeswoman said. We see that Herzberg indeed crossed the street away from the intersection, confirming earlier police reports that she was "outside the crosswalk" when the collision occurred.

On Sunday at about 10 p.m. local time, one of Uber's autonomous vehicles hit Elaine Herzberg, 49, in what is believed to be the first time a self-driving vehicle has killed a pedestrian.

Tempe Police Chief Sylvia Moir has said Uber's self-driving vehicle wasn't at fault in Herzberg's death, but experts disagree.

While it does not conclusively show who was at fault, the footage does reveal that the driver, 44-year-old Rafaela Vasquez, looked down just moments before the victim walked in front of the vehicle.

The videos show the moment directly leading up to the collision with views from the outside and inside of the self-driving Volvo. Humphreys said that if the laser sensors called the lidar failed to work "this accident calls into question Uber's ability to correctly and promptly interpret its data".

Several companies, including Tesla, Apple, Google and Uber, are working on self-driving vehicle technology. So as we develop self-driving technology, safety is our primary concern every step of the way. The local police department and federal agencies are investigating the accident to determine who, or what, was at fault.

Footage from the dry, dark Sunday night shows the vehicle cruising along at almost 40 miles per hour as Herzberg, 49, comes into sight.

Bryant Walker Smith, a University of SC professor who studies autonomous vehicles, said: 'The victim did not come out of nowhere.

Hasbun said the company doesn't use different background check requirements for autonomous vehicle operators compared to those who pick up passengers in their own vehicles. The system is created to provide a 360-degree virtual view of the environment surrounding the auto. "It seems unlikely that a human driver would have done better".

"It's just bad", says Tina Marie Herzberg White, a stepdaughter of the victim."There should be a criminal case", she adds.
