Google to spend $300m in bid to soothe relations with news publishers

Google's Shopping Actions feature could help retail chains keep customers

Schindler explains that a year ago Google paid $12.6 billion to partners, driving 10 billion clicks a month to publishers' websites for free.

Furthermore, Google also pledged to invest United States dollars 300 million over the next three years, according to The Verge.

We invested a lot time and energy in these collaborations.

Allegre said early results from the Shopping Actions program showed the average size of retailers' online shopping baskets has increased by 30 percent, a sign that consumers want the convenience of shopping directly from their Google searches. "The rapid evolution of technology is challenging all institutions, including the news industry, to keep pace", he said.

This is why Google has recently announced the Google News Initiative, an effort to improve the quality of journalism which in turn will hopefully cut down on fake news. Google also hosted a launch event in New York City.

Over the past few years, we've worked with publishers to elevate accurate, quality content and stem the flow of misinformation and disinformation.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated. You get the news, your preferred publications get more money and better metrics - it all sounds great in theory, but it'll be a while yet before Google's system becomes ubiquitous.

As part of the focus on improving Google's newsfeed, the company has committed to refining its search, news and YouTube algorithms to favour "authoritative sources" over relevance.

The Google News Initiative continues with that work to downplay specious "news" articles in search results. Those include the Disinfo Lab, a project that will "use computational tools and journalistic oversight to monitor misinformation during elections". It builds on several of the projects the company announced last fall. Many news outlets have struggled to adapt to the change in format, with a reliance on ad revenue not paying off in the the same way due to the prevalence of ad blockers. Today we're delivering on avision outlined previous year to enable publishers to diversify their revenue streams.

The "Subscribe with Google" tool allows internet users subscribe to multiple news outlets via their Google accounts. The feature is said to analyze which readers are more likely to subscribe to news sites and has already allegedly tripled the subscription rate for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's digital platform.

Reuters reported that the new partnership, called Shopping Actions, will be made available to retailers of any size in the United States. Every day millions of consumers search for products using phrases like, "Where can I buy this?"

Google is also working with the industry to develop "technical markers that can enable third party assessments of online content".
