Fifa Council rubber-stamp use of VAR at 2018 World Cup

Federation Internationale de Football Association has officially announced that the 2018 World Cup hosted by Russia next June will witness the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been a vocal advocate of VAR for some time, regularly voicing his support for the developing use of the technology and consistent in his opinion that the 2018 World Cup should be its grand premiere.

VAR allows officials to review and overturn referee decisions for incidents including goals, penalty awards, red cards and mistaken identity. "We will see at the World Cup".

"What we want is to help and to give the referee the possibility to have extra help when he has to make important decisions, and in a World Cup we make very important decisions, the VAR is helping the referee and we are going to have a more transparent and fairer game, and that's what we want", Infantino stated further.

"Video refereeing will bring much more to the transparency of football", he said.

Both bids will be evaluated first by a task force and disqualified if they did not meet FIFA's technical criteria.

Saturday's news conference revealed details of Morocco's bid book, which was presented to FIFA on Friday, with the central theme being making their football infrastructure sustainable after the tournament and keeping down construction costs.

Those hoping for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to land at University of Phoenix Stadium are going to have to go elsewhere to catch the action.

"We need to live with the times". Until now the World Cup hosts were selected exclusively by the football's body Executive Committee.
