Tillerson Delivers Farewell Statement Jam-Packed With Not-So-Subtle Jabs at Trump

WASHINGTON DC- MARCH 13 President Donald Trump holds a meeting with members of his cabinet including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis in the Cabinet Room of the White House

Trump's choice for Tillerson's replacement, Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo, is also vocally anti-Putin.

European diplomats saw some chance Pompeo may have more influence over Trump than Tillerson, who antagonized the US president by reportedly calling him a "moron" and who differed with Trump on Iran and other issues.

"When you look at the Iran deal, I think it's bad", Trump told reporters Tuesday.

He spoke on Tuesday of his desire to break the deal, but noted that Mr Tillerson "felt a little bit differently, so we were not really thinking the same".

There were conflicting messages from the White House and the State Department about the timeline of the firing on Tuesday, with the White House insisting that Tillerson had been told of the move last Friday. Trump wrote in his announcement.

On Monday, the day before Tillerson's termination, a White House spokesperson criticized a reporter for indicating that there may have been a split between Trump and Tillerson. Haspel has been linked to a series of controversies surrounding the usage of enhanced interrogation techniques (also known as torture), according to The New York Times.

U.S. allies line up for exemptions from Trump's tariffs
In talks, the United States should not expect any European Union concessions to win an exemption, European Union officials said. But the US has already thrown up barriers to Chinese imports. "This is not a trade negotiation", Katainen said.

"Let's hope that he puts his dedication to the mission and to the country before his partisan or personal loyalty to the president", Revere said. "He will continue our program of restoring America's standing in the world, strengthening our alliances, confronting our adversaries, and seeking the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". Policy differences weren't the only cause of conflict: In October, Tillerson looked as if he was on the way out when NBC reported he had called the president a "moron".

The Iran nuclear deal was one area of disagreement Trump singled out with Tillerson, a former oil executive who the president chose to serve as the nation's top diplomat despite having no prior public sector experience.

Now there are even reports that Tillerson didn't know he'd been fired until he saw it on Twitter.

Trump sees three defects in the deal: its failure to address Iran's ballistic missile programme; the terms under which global inspectors can visit suspect Iranian nuclear sites; and "sunset" clauses under which limits on the Iranian nuclear programme start to expire after 10 years.

Should the secretary of state have learned of his firing when everyone else found out-and through a tweet, of all forms of communication?

One of Pompeo's biggest challenges would be gaining the trust of a State Department shaken by the departures of many senior diplomats and embittered by proposed budget cuts. Before that, Tillerson's State Department was preparing new sanctions with the Treasury Department to target some of the entities and individuals charged last month by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for meddling online against the 2016 election. After the agreement was completed in 2015, Pompeo worked tirelessly as a member of Congress to meet with European bankers, diplomats and CEOs to make the case that investing in Iran was not as safe as they were hearing from John Kerry, who was secretary of state at the time.
