Late double bogey halts Ko charge

Michelle Wie

This year she started her final round five strokes adrift of leader Nelly Korda but chipped away at the deficit with six birdies over her first 17 holes until she completed her coup de grace with a shot that will be remembered for years.

Michelle Wie birdied four of her first five holes for a 66 to finish five shots adrift on 10-under, alongside Jessica Korda (68), Jin Yong Ko (67) and Marina Alex (70), who bogeyed three of her last four holes after briefly threatening for the lead.

She's had her doubters over her unorthodox putting styles over the years but Michelle Wie had her 'put-that-in-yer-pipe-and-smoke-it moment as she holed a monster 40-footer on the 72nd hole to win the Women's World Championship in Singapore - her first victory since the 2014 US Open.

Wie came up big on the final hole to record her first win since 2014, nailing a huge putt from off the green to secure the one-shot victory. She was bogey free on Sunday, shooting a 7-under-par 65.

She had earlier just missed several birdie opportunities, but a victory was always unlikely, and the double bogey dropped her back into a share of tenth.

A missed short birdie putt on the 16th was "the kick up the butt" Wie needed to look for something special over her closing holes, and after seeking counsel from Holloway one final time, the American made her mind up and committed to her task.

Up until that point the 25-year-old Kang's play had been flawless but bogies on 15 and 18 saw her hand up the lead to the charging Korda, who leads by a stroke from her rival going into the final round.

"I'm so proud of myself and my caddie and my entire team", Wie said to the LPGA website.

The duo added 68 runs between them and laid a solid foundation in the chase before the spinners came into operation. Williamson rebuilt the innings in a determined partnership of 96 for the seventh wicket with Mitchell Santner .

Jenny Shin watches her chip shot during the final round.

Had the teenager won she would have followed up her sister Jessica's win in Thailand last week.

"I wanted to win really badly, especially after what happened a year ago, I had some unfinished business. It definitely hurts, but that's golf", Korda said.

After a ideal drive, she hit an even more flawless approach and had a 15-foot try for a birdie to force a playoff. "Just have to keep going forward".

After sinking the winning putt, the 28-year-old pumped her fist and galloped towards the green, providing the LPGA Tour with its most exciting conclusion for some time. "I had some unfinished business here", Wie said. Korda and Kang finished in a four-way tie for second at 16-under, alongside Jenny Shin (65) and Brooke Henderson (67).

Wie moves to No.2 in the Race to the CME Globe with the win, her fifth on the LPGA Tour. "I heard it from a hole back".

"I was hitting it really well off the tee. Unfortunately I didn't make the putt, but that's golf", she said. "But I think that has to be the best putt of my career so far".
