World Indoor Championships preview

Laura Muir

New Zealand's Julian Oakley will contest the men's 3000m final at the world indoor athletics championships.

The 29-year-old Williams, who opened up with 14.37 metres, achieved the medal throw with her third attempt.

Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba won her third consecutive world indoor 3,000-meter title Thursday, holding off Sifan Hassan of The Netherlands and Britain's Laura Muir on the last lap at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, U.K.

Other possible medal contenders were expected to be Shelby Houlihan, who finished with a 28-second last 200m to win the US Champs, Germany's European under-23 1500m champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen and former European 5000m champion Meraf Bahta of Sweden.

Much of these World Indoor Championships have been overshadowed by a bewildering number of disqualifications and they continued aplenty on Saturday night, with numerous medals changing hands minutes and even hours after races had concluded. The European Indoor silver medallist was plagued by injury problems during the winter and missed the recent British Indoor Championships with injury, so it was perhaps no surprise to see that he was looking rusty and lacked rhythm during a men's high jump that did at least provide an intriguing battle between Mutaz Esha Barshim and Danil Lysenko for gold. This is a great competition and the race was fantastic.
