North Korea threatens to 'counter' United States over military drills with the South

Head of North Korean delegation Ri Son Gwon center is greeted by South Korean officials after he crosses the border line to attend their meeting at Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone in Paju South Korea Tuesday Jan. 9 2018

A North Korea official has threatened the USA yet again, promising "its own mode of counteraction" if the US takes part in joint military exercises with South Korea in the coming months.

"However, the hostile forces led by the U.S. labeled the exercise of this legitimate right as a "threat to global peace" and misused the voting mechanism of the UN Security Council to cook up several "sanctions resolutions" in an attempt to deprive the DPRK of its self-defensive right".

"I would bet that these coins are being turned into something - currency or physical goods - that are supporting North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile program", Moriuchi told Vox. It also called for the United States to be denounced by the worldwide community, accusing Washington of aiming to "aggravate the situation on the Korean peninsula at any cost".

In the decades-long history of North-US talks, "there had been no case at all where we sat with the US on any precondition, and this will be the case in future, too", the spokesperson was quoted as saying by the North's KCNA news agency.

Foreign Minister Taro Kono also said at a press conference, "We'll make serious efforts to share information with South Korea and the United States".

"The U.S. attitude shown after we clarified our intention for DPRK-U.S. dialogue compels us to only think that the U.S.is not interested in resuming the DPRK-U.S. dialogue".

North Korea on Saturday lambasted the USA for attaching preconditions to any dialogue between the states, as Seoul prepares to send an envoy to Pyongyang to help open talks on easing the nuclear stand-off on the peninsula.

The North said that as it has declared several times, it will consider any kind of blockade as an act of war.

Pyongyang isn't the only side that has slammed the U.S. for conducting joint drills with South Korea.

South Korea will likely send a ministerial-level official to the upcoming talks to reciprocate for the high-level North Korean delegation sent to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the sources said.

The North's representative then accused the USA of "amassing huge strategic assets in and around the Korean Peninsula, and mulling staging joint military exercises aimed at a pre-emptive nuclear attack on North Korea".
