Kushner's Israeli business ties examined amid loss of security clearance

Kushner's family real-estate business, Kushner Companies, received hefty loans from Citigroup and private equity group Apollo Global Management a year ago, the New York Times reported on Wednesday. The Kushner family's real estate firm, Kushner Cos., is struggling to find the means to pay off a debt of that dollar amount due in January 2019, thanks to its ill-advised purchase of the 666 Fifth Ave. office tower in New York City in 2007, shortly before the Great Recession. The form also shows that Mr. Kushner has a line of credit with Deutsche Bank worth between $5 million and $25 million.

Kushner, who lost his security clearance to White House following reports that he breached the ethics rule, found himself in the middle of another controversy after the report alleged that Kushner met with the top heads of the lending firms at the White House past year, after which he received an exorbitant sum of loan to aid his company's business ventures.

Officials from the United Arab Emirates, China, Israel and Mexico have privately discussed how to use Kushner's lack of foreign policy experience and business interests to their advantage, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

And on Wednesday, Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that the New York Department of Financial Services petitioned Deutsche Bank and other lenders for information about Kushner, his family and their eponymous company. In 2012, the Kushners and Steinmetz joined forces to buy almost $200 million of apartment buildings in the NY metropolitan area.

It was a few months after those meetings that Apollo loaned Kushner Companies $184 million to refinance a mortgage on a Chicago building, the newspaper said.

The two reportedly spoke about a potential job opportunity at the White House, but the job did not come to fruition.

Abbe Lowell, Kushner's attorney, said in a statement that the delay is not uncommon. "Stories like these attempt to make insinuating connections that do not exist to disparage the financial institutions and companies involved", she said.

Jared Kushner, senior adviser and son-in-law to US President Donald Trump, has had his security clearance downgraded, according to sources familiar with the issue.

The report said that National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster was taken aback by some of Kushner's foreign contacts.

Investigators working for Robert Mueller, the special counsel looking into Russian interference in the 2016 election, have asked questions about Kushner's interactions with potential investors from overseas, according to a person familiar with the matter.

But the complicated finances surrounding the Kushner family's vast real-estate empire and his qualifications for the foreign policy responsibilities given to him by his father-in-law invited scrutiny from the start.

Mr. Kushner resigned from his family's business after the 2016 election and sold his personal stake in some projects and assets to family members and others.

Mirijanian, the spokesperson for Kushner's lawyer, said Mueller had not sought from the Kushner Cos. or Kushner "any information or document concerning any business dealing either has had".
