Apple is said to negotiate buying cobalt direct from miners

Apple is one of the world’s largest end users of cobalt for the batteries in its gadgets

The sources in the report claim that Apple is looking to sign contracts to secure several thousand metric tons of cobalt a year, for up to five years, or maybe even longer. The talks began over a year ago but it's not certain that Apple will take a deal in the end. It's apparently due to concerns over shortages caused by the recent boom in electric vehicles, and it's hardly surprising considering the iPhone maker is one of the world's largest end users of cobalt as it uses it in all of its device batteries.

Apple is not the only company seeking long-term cobalt supply deals: BMW has been seeking its own 10-year deal for its electric vehicle program.

It can be recalled that in March 2017, Apple announced that it would stop buying hand-mined cobalt in the Congo following reports of child labor and unsafe work conditions.

The move to get more supplies of cobalt means the technology giant will find itself in competition with electric carmakers and battery producers to lock up cobalt supplies. BMW is also close to securing a 10-year supply deal with an unnamed supplier in February.

But Apple declined to comment. Apple has been in the talks with miners for more than a year. In response, for the first time past year, Apple released a list of all the companies from which it secures the supply of raw material.

The story described Jong as North Korea's equivalent to Ivanka Trump and suggested she had "struck a chord" with the public. However, he stressed that no incentive was being offered to get Pyongyang to come to the table.

The London Metal Exchange (LME), the world's biggest market for industrial metals, has also stepped up efforts to make sure that cobalt mined by child labour doesn't trade on the exchange, following several reports indicating that minors are being exploited to extract the coveted mineral.

Hong Kong-traded China Molybdenum, based in the central province of Henan, bought a 56 per cent stake in Congo-based copper and cobalt miner Tenke Fungurume Mining for US$2.65 billion in 2016.

Further, the report noted that during 2017, lithium-ion batteries deployed in the portable consumer electronics products accounted for roughly 72% of total cobalt consumed in the lithium-ion batteries.

Apple has increased its engagement with cobalt miners in recent years due to scrutiny from global human rights organizations.
