NASA breaks record for pictures taken farthest from Earth

NASA probe “New Horizons” snaps farthest-ever photo from Earth

That's because they were taken from the farthest point from planet Earth of any images ever captured, snapped by a spacecraft just over 3.79 billion miles (6.12 billion kilometers) from its home planet.

The images for "Pale Blue Dot" - part of a composite - were taken 3.75 billion miles (6.06 billion kilometers) away.

The NASA spacecraft that gave us close-ups of Pluto has set a record for the farthest photos ever taken. The craft is now on its way to Kuiper Belt to take pictures of the Kuiper Belt object (KBO) which was named 2014 MU69 on January 1st, 2019.

According to reports, the craft achieved the major milestone while drifting farther and farther through the outer boundaries of the solar system late a year ago. Though the process was routine, the simple image officially broke Voyager 1's record.

And, NASA says they're the closest images yet of objects in this region.

New Horizons is just the fifth spacecraft that goes through the heights of our solar system and opens itself into the real enormous universe. "It is possible for the cameras to be turned on, but it is not a priority for Voyager's Interstellar Mission", according to NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's website.

So how does New Horizons send back images, even blurry ones, through all that space?

According to NASA, New Horizons is healthy and is now in hibernation. Just 2 hours before, the spacecraft had officially claimed the title of spaciest photographer by capturing a camera-calibration shot of a far-off star cluster known as the Wishing Well. While this image broke the long-distance record established by Voyager 1, the probe then turned its LORRI instrument towards objects in its flight path. As Stephanie Pappas at LiveScience reports, after snapping an image and storing it on its hard drive, New Horizons sends its data back on an antenna that transmits at only 12 watts, moving data at a snail's pace-only two kilobits per second. So long as the mission goes according to plan, New Horizons could hold on to its lead for a long time.

The images, as seen above (Kuiper Belt objects) and below (Wishing Well cluster), are somewhat grainy and not the most detailed we've seen from NASA, but that doesn't make the feat any less remarkable. To get there, New Horizons is trucking: It travels more than 700,000 miles (1.1 million km) a day.
