Chelsea bomber Ahmad Rahimi sentenced to life in prison

New York bomber sentenced to life in prison

A year earlier, in September 2016, Rahimi transported two improvised pressure-cooker bombs - similar to those used in the Boston marathon bombing in April 2013 - from New Jersey to NY, placing both in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, authorities said. He is awaiting trial in New Jersey on those charges.

"You sound like most people and yet your actions are totally at odds with your voice", Berman said.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized United States citizen who was born in Afghanistan and lived in New Jersey, injured 30 people when one of his homemade bombs exploded in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood on a September night in 2016.

Using fingerprints found inside the unexploded devices, authorities tied the Afghan-born US citizen to a series of bombings that injured 30 across the area.

Rahimi's arrest came two days after the September 17 bombings during a shootout with police.

A second similar bomb, which was found a few blocks away on 27th Street, failed to detonate.

For Berman, anything less than the statutory sentencing guidelines "would be totally inappropriate and not viable".

Last Islamic State "Beatles" Captured in Syria
The detention of Kotey and Elsheikh will end a yearslong manhunt by British intelligence and security agencies, as well as a U.S. Kotey and Elsheikh were the two remaining members of the ISIS "Beatles" quartet who remained on the battlefield.

Berman handed down the sentence in US District Court in Manhattan, ending the prosecution of Rahimi, who was convicted of the high-profile act of jihad-inspired terrorism that was widely considered a near miss, injuring dozens without killing anyone.

Federal prosecutors said in court papers that Rahami has not shown remorse and had tried to radicalize fellow prisoners at the federal jail in NY where he has been imprisoned since his arrest.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Crowley argued that everything Rahimi has done since 2016 "has been fueled by hate", and "he has shown no remorse".

Rahimi was also ordered to pay $562,803 in restitution to the victims of his crimes, the statement added.

"Rahimi attempted to wreak havoc in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. He failed", said Commissioner O'Neill.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi, an Afghan immigrant who became radicalized through online postings by al Qaeda and ISIS, had faced at least one mandatory life sentence since, including use of a weapon of mass destruction.
