Trump's Military Parade Takes Shape

White House says Trump has asked for military parade

The president was reportedly so impressed by the military displays during a Bastille Day parade he observed in France past year that he's directed the Pentagon officials to put on something similar here in the U.S.

Donald Trump wants a splendid display of American military might rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue in a patriotic parade - so naturally, his political enemies must find a way to get hysterical about it.

Military parades are common in some countries, but the United States traditionally has not staged showy displays of military power. It included tanks, armoured vehicles and a flyover of U.S. and French military jets.

The Pentagon wants to have the parade on Veterans Day in November, which also happens to be the 100th anniversary of victory in World War I. That date has the added advantage of being after the midterm elections, allowing the military to steer clear of politics.

According to The Washington Post, Trump's interest in having a large-scale military parade now is likely to receive a mixed reception, especially among those who are concerned about nationalism, militarism or the president's past praise for authoritarian leaders.

The president, according to the Post, was inspired by France's Bastille Day celebrations, which feature marching soldiers and armored vehicles. At least one Department of Defense official has already expressed concerns that running heavy military equipment of the kind Trump has asked for could damage local infrastructure. The cost of shipping Abrams tanks and high-tech hardware to Washington could run in the millions, and military officials said it was unclear how they would pay for it.

"That's not who we are", said Sen.

A Wintry chill with more February Snow and Ice
A warning for all of Ireland says that snow showers are likely to give accumulations of less than 3cm on Tuesday. Further heavy snowfall is forecast across Scotland, northern England and Wales through much of today (Tuesday).

The federal government has sponsored military parades in the past, but they have generally been used to celebrate the end of a war, such as the 1991 parade held to honor those who served in the Gulf War.

"I don't think it's a particularly good idea", he said of the parade.

"Take the money that the president would like to spend on this parade [and] instead, let's make sure our troops are ready for battle and survive it and come home to their families", said Durbin to MSNBC Wednesday. And the event would likely cost millions of dollars, with no clear plan on how it would be paid for.

"We've been putting together some options", Defence Secretary James Mattis told reporters during a White House press briefing.

The Pentagon and the White House are exploring various options.

But the more I think about it, the more I think that it's maybe not such a awful idea.

In January previous year, the newly appointed Trump administration was contemplating having a "Red Square/North Korea-style parade" for the inauguration, a source revealed to The Huffington Post. Some 8,000 veterans marched along with tanks that trudged down a flag-festooned Constitution Avenue as fighter planes roared over the National Mall, before a crowd of about 800,000.
