Justin Trudeau says he 'shouldn't' make 'dumb' jokes after 'peoplekind' comment

Justin Trudeau

President Donald Trump's threat to tear up the North American free trade pact would cause economic suffering in the United States in a decision that would also be bad politics, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says.

Trudeau has been mocked on social media and talk shows since using the word. "It played well in the room and in context".

The Canadian Prime Minister interrupted a woman, identified only as Aimee from The World Mission Society Church Of God, who was asking him a question during an event in Edmonton, Alberta.

The comments from Trudeau came as American trade representative Robert Lighthizer said frustration with Canada could lead to finishing NAFTA negotiations with Mexico first, then doing a separate negotiation with Canada later, according to Congressman Ron Kind.

"How dare you kill off mankind, Mr Trudeau, you spineless virtue-signalling excuse for a feminist", complained Piers Morgan in a column for the Daily Mail.

Jokes included pictures posted of comic superhero Batman changing his name to "Batperson" and suggestions that Manitoba become "Peopletoba".

"Fox and Friends" devoted a segment to the term featuring University of Toronto professor Jordan Peterson, who has gained notoriety for steadfastly refusing to use gender-neutral terms, turning him into something of a celebrity on the right. On Tuesday, however, the president appeared to be holding his thumbs.

"One of your most infamous Chicagoans, Al Capone, who was as effective an importer of Canadian goods into the U.S.as anyone once pointed out he didn't even know what street Canada was on".

Conservatives broke into a patronising rhetoric calling Trudeau's move - as Australian conservative commentator Rita Panahi said - "an attempt to appease those desperate to find offence where none exists" with others claiming that "his political correctness has gone haywire".

Over the next four days, the Canadian Prime Minister will visit Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles to promote NAFTA and the importance of the Canada-U.S. trading relationship.
