Julian Assange loses challenge to United Kingdom arrest warrant

Julian Assange

His lawyer Mark Summers had argued in court that the United Kingdom arrest warrant no longer had a goal or function, as it relates to a Swedish sex crimes investigation now concluded.

Senior district judge Emma Arbuthnot is due to give her ruling on Tuesday, although either side can appeal against the decision.

The 46-year-old has been inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London in self-imposed exile since June 2012.

If he were to leave, he would face arrest by British police for skipping bail to avoid extradition to Sweden to face an allegation of rape, which has been dropped.

He could still be arrested for leaving Ecuador's embassy in London, where he has lived for years.

The WikiLeaks founder fears that Sweden would extradite him to the United States, where he faces prosecution for WikiLeaks' publication of leaked U.S. military and diplomatic documents.

Meanwhile, regarding the CAS decision on Russian athletes, Bach said it is " extremely disappointing " and "surprising". He called for a review of the internal structures of CAS to resolve issues such as delayed reasoned decisions.

The judge said that if Assange wanted the warrant lifted he should surrender to authorities and come to court.

But she said she would rule separately on another application from Assange's lawyers asking her to consider whether it would be in the "public interest" to keep the warrant in place.

Mr Summers said Mr Assange had "at all times" offered to cooperate with the Swedish investigation and the five and a half years he had spent in the embassy in London "may be thought to be adequate, if not severe punishment, for the actions that he took".

In January, Julian Assange's advocates made an application to the court, explaining that his breach of former bail conditions was no longer valid as Sweden had withdrawn the European arrest warrant and proceedings against Assange had ended. Last year, WikiLeaks released documents detailing US government hacking tools. Last month, Ecuador said it had granted the Australian-born hacker citizenship in a bid to break the logjam.

Lawyers for the WikiLeaks founder asked the court to withdraw the warrant, saying it had "lost its purpose".
