Bannon subpoenaed by House intelligence panel, but will he show?

Former White House strategist Steve Bannon is expected to be a no-show before the House Intelligence Committee which is probing Russian interference in the 2016 election

The house panel wants Mr Bannon to testify as part of its investigation of allegations that Russian Federation sought to influence the 2016 presidential election in the United States, following up on his January 16 appearance that failed to satisfy some members of the committee.

Escalating a tense standoff with the panel, Bannon isn't planning on showing up because the White House and committee haven't reached an agreement over the scope of the questioning, the source said. "We look forward to having him before the Committee once we can assure that he will be able to thoroughly answer all our questions without concerns regarding the scope of executive privilege".

The committee has made a decision to postpone his interview until next week to allow time for the committe and the White House to agree on the terms of the interview.

Representative Tom Rooney (R-Fla.), another House intelligence panel member, declined to predict that Bannon would heed the committee's subpoena.

Five Syrians treated for 'suffocation' after regime airstrikes using apparent toxic gas
Mattis hinted at such action on Friday, referencing a USA missile strike on a Syrian military airfield a year ago . Unlike sarin, chlorine gas is relatively easy to produce and is not banned by the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Mr. Bannon had a very public fall from grace early this year after being quoted extensively in Michael Wolff's tell-all book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" and has thus far had a return interview with the House Intelligence committee pushed back three times. The panel wants him to appear again to follow up on a January 16 appearance that failed to satisfy some of its members.

This is not the first time the committee has pushed back its subpoena as it has negotiated with Bannon over answering questions about the transition and his time in the White House, which he did not answer when he was interviewed last month.

Trump's staff have tried to utilize the concept of executive privilege to withhold information from the committee. "But, Bannon is not the one to assert executive privilege - only the president can do that", Gerhardt told Business Insider.

The White House and the president's legal team have not responded to requests for comment. "It has as much control as Bannon and his lawyer allow them".
