Five Myths About the Nuclear Posture Review

Trump's Troubling Nuclear Plan

A draft report of the Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) has been slammed after featuring a graphic showing a very different version of Kim Jong-un's fiefdom. "You have to do that when you're in a position of persuasion, not of hoping".

But rather than laying out a plan to halt this slide into a more unsafe world and working to decrease reliance on nuclear weapons, the Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) hastens its rise by accepting the reasoning of USA adversaries and affirmatively embracing nuclear competition.

The Trump administration appears poised to expand the circumstances under which the United States might use nuclear weapons, including in response to a cyberattack.

Trump said the 2018 NPR addresses those challenges.

The review recommends modifying "a small number" of existing nuclear warheads on Trident missiles carried on USA submarines to reduce the weapons' explosive power.

The thought is with the low-yield weapons, other countries with the weapons would not use them for fears of retaliation from the U.S.

"Correcting this mistaken Russian perception is a strategic imperative", according to the review.

"It enhances deterrence of strategic attacks against our nation, and our allies and partners, that may not come in the form of nuclear weapons", he said.

Russian Federation says Su-27 fighter jet intercepted USA spy airplane; United States protests
State Department is calling out Moscow after what it describes as a dangerously close pass by a Russian fighter jet near a U.S. Pamela Kunze, the US Naval Forces Europe says, "Unsafe actions‎ increase the risk of miscalculation and midair collisions".

In addition, a new nuclear-armed cruise missile launched from naval vessels would be developed, a process likely to take years.

Currently, maintenance and operation of our aging nuclear arsenal requires only 2-3 percent of the Defense Department's budget, which itself is a smaller share of the federal budget than during the Cold War.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said the NPR will allow the remain "flexible and well-prepared for the unique threats we face today. As someone who knows the horror of a nuclear weapon, I find (the new policy) extremely disappointing", said 83-year-old Shoso Kawamoto in Hiroshima.

It was just one weapon highlighted in Friday's report, which focused heavily on current and future capabilities of USA weapons, along with the advancements made in countries like Russian, China, North Korea and Iran.

DONALD Trump's administration has made an embarrassing gaffe on a nuclear report on North Korea. It said Russian Federation must be convinced it would face "unacceptably dire costs" if it were to threaten even a limited nuclear attack in Europe.

The United States administration has announced plans to update its nuclear arsenal. Congress will have to determine whether such systems are worth funding and, if so, how to afford them given the massive and growing costs of modernizing just the existing triad of nuclear systems deployed by the United States.

The review took a whole-of-government approach that involved the Departments of Defense, State and Energy, he said. "In a competitive situation, you also have to hold at risk, in this case, what North Korea holds dear, to remind them, 'Don't do it".

"This review rests on a bedrock truth: nuclear weapons have and will continue to play a critical role in deterring nuclear attack and in preventing large-scale conventional warfare", he said. "It will raise the nuclear threshold and help ensure that potential adversaries perceive no possible advantage in limited nuclear escalation, making nuclear employment less likely". Already, myths of a nuclear Armageddon have monopolized the media space.
