Nintendo Switch outsells entire Wii U sales in 10 months

Nintendo Shipped 14.86 Million Switch Units in 2017; Increases Prediction to 17.74 Million by March

Nintendo also shared some software sales figures for the Switch's first year, and leading the way is Super Mario Odyssey with 9.07 million copies sold.

Nintendo has announced that it has distributed 14.86 million Switch units worldwide since its launch, updated to December 31, 2017. It now expects to make a profit of 160 billion yen ($1.47 billion/£1.03 billion), 33.3% above previous forecasts. It will be "appealing to younger audience which has not been addressed by Nintendo for some time".

Nintendo reported earnings for its fiscal third quarter of 2017 on Wednesday that beat market expectations, with the gaming giant also upping the sales forecast for its flagship Switch console.

In contrast? The WiiU - first released back in 2012 and finally put out of its misery in 2017 sold only 13 million consoles all together.

Splatoon 2 has sold 4.91 million copies since July. While Microsoft hasn't released official Xbox One sales numbers in months, speculation indicates that its sales fall somewhere in the 34 million range.

Nintendo's software sales are doing even better.

Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said that Switch sales during the holiday season were stronger than expected in Japan, the United States, and Europe. A chart from Statista reveals that though only a few developers are now working on the relatively new console, it is only behind Windows PC and PS4 when it comes to attracting developer interest. Nintendo has clearly recovered rather well with the Switch. Nintendo shares are up over 107 per cent in the past year. Reaction has been overwhelmingly positive from analysts, who say the new products could significantly broaden Switch adoption beyond gamers.

Other Nintendo products - how are they doing?

The company also plans on selling 20 million consoles over the next financial year.
