E-cigarettes could raise risk of cancer and heart disease, warn scientists

Vaping may raise cancer and heart disease risk, study suggests

A new piece of research weighs in on the hot topic of vaping and its effect on health, specifically looking at the effect of e-cigarette vapor and DNA mutations that may eventually lead to cancer.

"We don't know which one is more harmful", he said. Nicotine inhaled from e-cigarettes could be converted into chemicals that damage DNA in the heart, lungs and bladder, according to the study.

Researchers subjected cultured human bladder and lung cells to e-cigarette vapor which is created to avoid the carcinogenic byproducts of tobacco.

E-cigarette users are possibly putting themselves at risk for developing heart disease, lung and bladder cancers, according to a new report.

This is avoided in e-cigarettes, with nicotine delivered through aerosols without burning tobacco.

There was also conclusive evidence that e-cigarettes can explode and cause burns and projectile injuries. The findings, though preliminary, indicate that the devices - which aerosolize nicotine and contain no tobacco - may not be as safe as previously assumed. On the one hand, there are doctors and advocates who insist that vaping is a relatively safe, appealing way for smokers to wean themselves off much more unsafe tobacco products. In 2016, the U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called e-cigarette use among American youth a "major public health concern", citing a 900 percent growth rate among high school students.

UConn's researchers tested how known cancer-causing chemicals found in regular cigarettes damaged a DNA sample and compared it to how the various chemicals e-cigarettes use affected DNA. Natural DNA fix mechanisms were also suppressed in the mice exposed to the smoke.

The news may come as a shock for many users of e-cigarettes, as vaping has grown in popularity due to its percieved health advantages over smoking tobacco.

Tang went on to look at human lung and bladder cells and found that exposing the cells to nicotine and its breakdown products made the cells turn into tumour tissue more easily.

A comprehensive review of the scientific literature, released earlier this month by the US National Academies of Science, found that vaping is likely less harmful than cigarettes, but may lead to addiction in young people.

Last week a major U.S. report into the health effects of e-cigarettes found that vaping might be useful to help people quit smoking. Most study participants said they had completely switched from smoking to vaping.

The researchers exposed the animals to e-cigarette vapors that contain both nicotine and a liquid solvent.
