Super blue moon lunar eclipse to take place January 31

NASA has mapped the times of the total lunar eclipse from start to finish.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth into its shadow. NASA calculates Wednesday's moon will be 223,068 miles from Earth. The moon sets soon after, so inland US should be able to get a better view of the Blue Supermoon Eclipse just a few minutes after. More specifically, a full moon, a total lunar eclipse, a blue moon that will look reddish, and a supermoon. This occurs every 29.5 days, when the moon is directly opposite the sun relative to Earth.

In Paducah, the maximum eclipse will happen at 6:54 a.m., and the moon will be right on or just below the horizon.

A blood moon refers to a lunar eclipse. At 4.51am CST the penumbra - or lighter part of Earth's shadow - will touch the moon.

Mr Bennedick said the event was not a true blood moon, which is usually caused by an excess of smoke or dust in the Earth's atmosphere. But, remember, it is not a scientific term. Dr Anil Pandey, chief of the Institute explained, "On that day, the moon will be on the closer orbit to the earth. When a full moon phase and a perigee (or near perigee) place in its orbit coincide, we call that a super moon", Raymundo explained.

The moon will not be blue for people in Asia and eastern Australia because the moon will not be considered full until February 1. A NASA map shows where the eclipse will be most visible and when depending on the viewer's location across the country. Such a celestial event last took place in 1866. The Jan. 21, 2019 lunar eclipse will only be a supermoon however, not a blue moon, according to NASA.

WHYdoes the moon seem to appear bigger sometimes?

Set your alarms, space fans - if you can drag yourself out of bed next Wednesday, you're in for a treat. You may have also noticed that as it moves overhead, the size becomes smaller.

A pair of binoculars will help magnify the view and will make the red coloration of the moon brighter. This striking phenomenon has kept them puzzled for years.
