Tim Cook Says iPhone Users Can Turn Off Throttling -- Soon

Beware! A new bug can crash iOS and macOS with a single text message

Apple continues to get into hot water over a power management feature that throttles performance on older iPhones to avoid unexpected battery shutdowns.

Following a public uproar, Apple CEO Tim Cook told ABC News Apple's next iOS update will be more transparent about the health of your phone battery. CEO Tim Cook has now addressed the subject in an interview with ABC News, denying that the feature was completely hidden but admitting it could have done more to inform users about what was going on. Though after these changes, at least that decision will be up to you. However, it said it would never do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product. Cook also mentioned that Apple is now searching for the site Apple will build its third campus, which will be located in a different state than its current California and Texas locations.

Cook was responding to questions about the recent finding that Apple slows down the performance of iPhones whose batteries have degraded to that level.

The practice makes sense to maintain the iPhone's reliability, but it's controversial because people didn't know about it and were likely to buy a new iPhone instead of replacing their older iPhone's battery for much less. Soon, however, the so-called feature will become an option you can toggle off.

Emerging technologies drive more risks than firms can protect against
Cybersecurity was at the centre of concern for the almost 1,000 experts who provided feedback. So, it's easy to see why the environment tops the list of risks .

The company has also temporarily reduced the price of replacement batteries for the iPhone 6 and later to $29, starting in late January.

"We will tell somebody we're slightly reducing your performance by some amount in order to not have an unexpected restart and if you don't want it, you can turn it off". Currently, iOS will warn users if their battery is substantially decayed, but will not notify them of partial aging - even if that aging is severe enough to warrant the slowdown. Last week two beta updates were rolled out, and this fast pace may indicate that iOS 11.2.5 is nearly ready for prime time.

"When we did put it out, we did say what it was, but I don't think a lot of people were paying attention and maybe we should have been clearer as well", Cook said.
