Shock and horror: Ferrari plans an electric supercar

Matteo Renzi receives a Ferrari's Formula One replica from FCA Chief Executive and Ferrari Chairman Sergio Marchionne during Ferrari's sport car maker debut at the Milan's stock exchange downtown Milan

While attending the Detroit Auto Show, Marchionne divulged details about Ferrari's new-found willingness to venture into the all-electric vehicle realm, revealing that FCA's hand has been forced by Tesla, Bloomberg reports.

Ferrari's desire to push into electrification is seen as a direct challenge to Tesla's slated release of the new and improved Roadster in 2020 - but don't expect Ferrari to unveil anything soon. If Ferrari beats it, and beats it to the market, it will claim the title of the world's quickest-acceleration production vehicle. 'People are amazed at what Tesla did with a supercar - I'm not trying to minimise what Elon did but I think it's doable by all of us'. Marchionne says that what Tesla did is impressive but if an electric supercar can be built, Ferrari will be the first.

Marchionne went on to say that Ferrari is compelled to launching an electric auto because of the speed at which powertrain technology is changing.

Now he announces that Ferrari is working an electric supercar.

Ford plans to invest 11 billion United States dollars in development of electric cars
The company has more than doubled the initial planned investment which will also cover the cost of developing dedicated electric vehicle architectures.

Then there's the sketchy timeline for this - Marchionne describes Ferrari's eventual electric supercar as an "if", rather than a definite certainty.

Tesla's Model S in high-performance configurations has been embarrassing some supercars as well. There's no need for Ferrari to be early to the market, as they're only ever going to sell a relative few cars to particularly wealthy buyers. Anyone who's now even considering buying a Ferrari in the near future probably isn't too concerned about the environmental impact of such a vehicle, otherwise they'd already be looking at new Teslas instead.

Forget about the next-gen Roadster or even the original Roadster, which came out in 2008 and some considered a supercar, but there have been plenty of electric supercars since, like Rimac's Concept_One, Nio's EP9, and others.
