State Capture Inquiry - Mkhwebane Reacts, Raising More Questions Than Answers

President Jacob Zuma

South African President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday he will set up a commission of inquiry into allegations of influence-peddling, after a 2016 anti-graft report called for a judge to investigate any corruption in his government.

Balton added that while the establishment of the inquiry was in keeping with the State of Capture report's remedial recommendations, it was disappointing that action was taken by the President only after a court ruling compelled him to do so.

Kenyatta's discussion with Zuma will focus on bridging the balance of trade which is now highly in favor of South Africa.

ANCWL said the commission would expose corruption in both the private and public sectors.

In October 2016, President Zuma made a historic State visit to Kenya which witnessed the signing of multiple agreements and Memoranda of Understanding in various sectors concerning cooperation in defense, investment, biodiversity and travel.

"The allegations that the state has been wrestled out of the hands of its real owners, the people of South Africa, is of paramount importance and are therefore deserving of finality and certainty".

Cape Town - Former public protector Thuli Madonsela has advised her successor, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, that an extension of the Zondo Commission's brief will amount to "scope creep".

The political turmoil over the numerous corruption allegations has hurt South Africa's economy, which briefly dipped into recession a year ago. We hope that the NEC will have the backbone to heed calls by Robben Islanders such as Ahmed Kathrada and Laloo Chiba, as well as numerous other veterans, who have called for Zuma to step down.

ANC insiders say this ace played by Zuma could weaken any attempts to oust him at Wednesday's NEC sitting, where it is rumoured that he will make an appearance.

According to Saxby, "in saying "there should be no area of corruption and culprit that should be spared the extent of this commission of inquiry", Zuma appears to have left the door open to an all-encompassing inquiry that could stretch back to corruption in the apartheid era".

In a volte-face on Tuesday, Mr Zuma appointed the country's deputy chief justice to lead the inquiry, having resisted calls for more than a year from a government ombudsman, the courts, and the ANC itself to set up the investigation.
