Google Merges Wallet, Android Pay into Google Pay

A big update on Google’s unified payment solution

Google's unified payment platform is effectively like Apple Pay, a unified service that Apple customers can use on websites, apps, and in stores. In the announcement from Pali Bhat, VP of Product Management, Payments for Google, he notes that the company has been working to make purchasing experiences "simpler, safer, and more consistent". "Today, we're excited to make this feature available for Gmail users in the UK", Travis Green, Google Wallet product manager, wrote in a blog post announcing the news.

Here's where it gets a little confusing. The Mountain View-based company says that a number of merchants already support this feature, including Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse, and Instacart.

Google Wallet, as it was originally known, allowed users to both send funds to one another, like Venmo or PayPal, and use their phone's NFC capabilities for tap-and-pay physical transactions.

This all-new Google Pay branding was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 event being held in Las Vegas. Anyone that has ever paid for something in the real-world with Android Pay, purchased an app on Google Play or used Chrome to automatically fill in payment details is familiar with Google's fragmented payments ecosystem. For now, however, it doesn't sound as if much is changing - just the name. We're not betting that Google is going to be able to streamline all digital payments with Google Pay, but it sure would be nice if Android had a single method for buying stuff.
