Would you pay 25p extra for your morning coffee to cut waste?

A cross-party committee called for urgent action to curb the mountain of up to five billion disposable coffee cups dumped each year in the UK almost none of which are recycled

Evidence from Eunomia Research and Consulting suggests that a "latte levy" of 25 pence on single-use cups could reduce their use by up to 30 per cent, a figure supported by Cardiff University, which conducted a study into the efficacy of charges and other measures and revealed that consumers are far more responsive to a charge than a discount. "Disposable coffee cups are an avoidable waste problem and if the United Kingdom can not be confident of their future sustainability, the government should ban them".

Britons sipping on hot tea or strong coffee should pay an extra 25 pence ($NZ0.47) "latte levy" if they use a disposable cup, common in coffee shops and fast food eateries, British lawmakers said on Friday.

'We need to kick-start a revolution in recycling.

The cups are technically recyclable, but because they mix paper and plastic components there are only three recycling facilities in the United Kingdom that can deal with them.

A lot of coffee shops offer discounts if people bring their own cup, but MPs claim that only 1-2 per cent of people actually take advantage of that.

However, the difficulties surrounding the recycling of coffee cups are manifold: not only are recycling capabilities limited but the majority of cups go straight into the general waste. "We're calling for clearer labelling so people can make informed choices about their use and disposal of coffee cups".

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, chef and campaigner, said: "The UK has woken up and smelled the coffee cup nightmare".

Cropper takes cups collected by coffee retailers instore recycling bins, removes the plastic and turns them into luxury paper and packaging products.

Last night chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall - whose BBC show Hugh's War on Waste first drew attention to the paper cup problem - said the report showed "the United Kingdom has finally woken up and smelled the coffee cup nightmare". Even though some are recyclable, the United Kingdom has just three facilities where the paper and plastic can be separated.

As a result, MPs have urged a total ban on coffee cups should be imposed by 2023, unless the recycling process is dramatically improved.

The committee's report states: 'There is no excuse for the reluctance we have seen from Government and industry to address coffee cup waste. If not achieved, the report states, an outright ban on coffee cups should be introduced.

Numerous cups are printed with the three-arrow triangular "Mobius loop" symbol that eight out of ten people think means they can be put in the recycling.

They said the disposable cups that majority used actually had a "shockingly low recycling rate" - less than 1 per cent. Cafes with in-store recycling systems should print their cups with "recyclable in store only", the MPs add.
