Hoda Kotb officially replaces Matt Lauer as Today show co-anchor

Savannah Guthrie right and Hoda Kotb appear with the Rockettes during the 85th annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in New York. NBC News opened the new year by appointing Kotb as co-anchor of the

News on Tuesday officially named veteran reporter Hoda Kotb to replace disgraced anchor Matt Lauer on the "Today" show.

"This has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made, and I am so thrilled", Guthrie said after the show's new opening revealed Kotb was her new co-host.

Kotb joined "TODAY" in 2008 as a co-host of the show's fourth hour, a role that she will continue to fill, and has been a frequent substitute in the program's anchor chair for a number of years.

"You are a partner and a friend and a sister and I am so happy to be doing this", Guthrie added.

Kotb had stepped in as guest host on the show in Lauer's absence.

Kotb has worked as a broadcast journalist since 1986, when she started her career as a news assistant in Egypt for CBS News, according to Variety.

There will be a label above the post that tells you is a recommended post which is similar to how they display ads. The new section is clearly labelled so you will clearly notice when a post is not from an account you now follow.

Her fellow "Today" coworkers all took to Twitter to celebrate the promotion.

Today weather anchor Al Roker is taking back his mocking of a fan who complained about the announcement that Hoda Kotb would replace Matt Lauer as co-anchor.

"I'm pinching myself", she added.

For the first time in its decades-long history, "TODAY" will be led by two female co-anchors. "I think that we should send some medics to Alexandria, Va., where my mom has likely fainted".

Kotb joined NBC News in 1998 as a Dateline NBC correspondent, after working in local news in New Orleans. "They have an undeniable connection with each other and most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of 'TODAY'". She has been one of the show's most valued employees, getting promoted to third co-anchor in March of 2017, making her an obvious choice when NBC News needed an immediate fill-in after Matt Lauer got fired. The timing is important for NBC, because Today will get a burst of attention next month with the Winter Olympics.

Ben Bogardus, a journalism professor at Connecticut's Quinnipiac College, said Kotb's selection was a good one "because it reinforces the sense of a family coming together after a shared trauma".
